Hate crimes are a serious problem whether directed to homosexuals, a certain ethnicity, or just people that live differently. The fact that people are able to commit hate crimes against someone that has done no physical harm to anyone else makes me sad for the world. But even though that is an issue, there is always two sides to a story. I understand that in the Amish community facial hair and hair in general are major parts of the spiritual, and traditional infrastructure, but looking at the side of the criminal's story in this sense he felt it was justified. Sam Mullet, his three sons and 4 others were arrested in Ohio, Wednesday morning, for allegedly attacking and cutting the hair of multiple Amish families in Holmes County. But when questioned Sam said he did it because of the way those families treated his family and felt they tried to force their beliefs on them that they didn't want to abide by. I think that Sam and his family went about reacting to the situation wrong and that there could have been a better way to handle it. But in another sense I feel that you have to stand up for your rights and make your own decisions and not let anyone try to co-erse you to their whims. I believe that the punishment may have been a little harsh for the crime but in all, Sam and his family do need to understand that what they did was wrong. I am glad though that the Amish community doesn’t want to press charges but I just hope that they will not try to act out vigilante justice or anything that may further cause problems for the community.
